Do rabbits need a run in winter?

Ok so I'm getting a rabbit soon, my pet shop told me I only need a run in spring, summer and autumn and it will just live in it's hutch in winter because it can be to cold, however I'm not so sure because I only live in the UK. Do your rabbits use there run in winter and will my rabbit get fat if it doesn't use a run in winter?
